Are You Stumbling Over this Fundamental Roadblock to Well-being?

I was recently coaching a client who had been diagnosed a few months ago with cancer. A bump in the road popped up which surprised me – at first. Then I realized this is simply the other side of a very common coin.

We were using TAT. This is a simple yet fascinating process that brings the light of consciousness to dark places within – places that you may not have allowed to surface for years. And that little bit of light and air frequently dissolves them on the spot.

As we were exploring which of the stresses around my client's cancer to focus on during the session, an intriguing belief surfaced for him:

I need this cancer in order to heal.

Hmmmm. I asked my client what healing would be for him. He answered, "To relax. To be in the present moment."

Waiting To Be Here Now

I had cancer myself a few years back. Because it was discovered at late second-stage – when my chances of survival were already rapidly diminishing - and because it was a form of cancer that chemo and radiation had a good track record with, I opted for standard medical treatment.

I had an energy healing session after each chemo session, which prevented the more severe side effects. Yet, I felt rather lifeless during the six weeks of chemo and radiation treatments. I remember noticing that I was not having any of the marvelous insights and realizations spoken of in inspirational books about healing from cancer and other severe illness.

I already knew my true passion and direction and was even pursuing it. But during this time, I felt no enthusiasm for it or for anything else. I did not appreciate life more, unlike the people in those books. Rather, it just felt like I was marking time until all of this was over.

Now, on the one hand, I know that the chemo was depressing my whole system. Also, I think I was still partially frozen in unresolved trauma over the literally shocking diagnosis. (If only I had known about TAT then!) Still, I was very conscious of marking time, of waiting for it to be over. This was simply the obverse of my client's coin:

I need this cancer and these treatments to be over in order to live.

In fact, it would probably be safe to say that at least 95% of us, sick or well, are living in a peculiarly feverish state of suspended animation:

After I get what I want, then I'll be whole.

And the Old English word for "whole," of course is the root of the word "heal."

Can't Cry for Laughing!

What strange and wondrous worlds you and I do live in:

A world in which the primary hope for being able to relax is a life-or-death crisis.

A world in which the only way to feel alive is not to be here now in this disappointing life.

A world in which we pursue happiness by focusing all of our attention on the life-consuming problem of having what we don't want and wanting what we don't have. (A quick thanks to the Buddha for that little gem of an insight!)

Ah! So that's why they call it the human comedy. (What - You can't laugh for crying?)

So - What To Do?

You've probably already been told many times to "be here now"; don't live in the past or the future, live in the now; don't worry, be happy! And it may have penetrated somewhat. Then again, the response that came to mind may have been, "Later!"

But the belief that you need to be someone else, somewhere else or sometime else in order to truly be who you are is something that permeates our culture - and most other cultures for that matter. It's like smog in the air – we get so used to the taint of it that we don't really notice it until we wake up one day and realize it's painful to take a deep breath.

There are many tools available to help us deal with beliefs that we know very well we "shouldn't" have but that we in fact do have, like it or not. One of the tools that I particularly resonate to is TAT.

How to do TAT is beyond the scope of this article, but you can easily learn the basic steps by going to the official TAT website. (See the "The Source of this Technique" section below.)

Many, many people have reported stunningly effective success in releasing stressful experiences in a few TAT sessions they may have struggled with for years.

Try it now!

You can download a free introductory booklet on "How To Do the 9 Steps of TAT" from founder Tapas Fleming's website: www.TATLife.com

I suggest you use one of the beliefs above, or a related belief that is specific to you, to practice with. Use the belief as the first step. (You'll understand what I'm talking about when you download "How To Do The Steps of TAT.)

Enjoy!
